By KEVIN ROBERTS STAFF WRITER Through the first three games of the 2019 American Legion baseball season, Southington Kiltonic Post 72 had seen the No. 1 pitcher from each opponent. Southington was off to an 0-2 start entering its June 19 home game against West Hartford Post 96, but it had one of its best, Ryan Henderson, on the mound. Henderson succeeded in notching up a complete-game effort as Post 72 emerged with a 1-0 victory over Post 96 at Southington High School. It was just the starting pitching performance Southington needed as it continued to wait for its offense to get into gear. “Our hitting’s been struggling, but we’re going to get used to the wood bat, we’re going to get better,” coach Marc Verderame said. “Every year, we kind of come out here and struggle. We coach them up, get better, get some more swings. Our opponents, they’ve got to get us now, because we’re only going to get better.” Southington followed up the win over West Hartford with a doubleheader sweep of Winsted Post 43 this past Sunday at Walker Field in Winsted. Post 72 won the first game 5-3 and the second game 2-1. Add in […]

Baseball: Blues pick up 3-game win streak over week
By KEVIN ROBERTS STAFF WRITER The Bristol Blues won four of the five games they played last week, including three in a row at the end. After 7-0 and 8-5 wins at Muzzy Field on June 19 and June 22, the Blues embarked on a six-game road trip that began this past Sunday against the Westfield Starfires in Westfield, Mass. “It was tough because we were supposed to have a home game on Thursday (June 20), then we’d have the off-day. That gets postponed, so we end up having two off-days with no baseball activity,” said assistant coach Jordie Scheiner, who filled in for head coach Ronnie Palmer on June 22. “We were unsure of what would happen tonight, but the boys came and they battled, and now we just have to prepare for a long week of road trips.” Bristol beat Westfield, 7-4, on Sunday and improved to 8-10 on the season. Here’s what happened last week: Blues 6, Suns 5 JUNE 17—Bristol scored two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to overcome a 5-0 deficit and beat Pittsfield at Wahconah Park. Dominic Niman (West Hartford) was the winning pitcher after throwing 1.2 innings […]

Post 2 halted by Berlin’s big inning
By MICHAEL LETENDRE STAFF WRITER BRISTOL – The Bristol American Legion Senior baseball squad had its ace pitcher on the mound in its Zone 1 tilt versus Berlin from Muzzy Field on Monday, June 17 in what was a very competitive bout. Jagger Duquette allowed just one hit into the fourth inning and was in control throughout. But six straight Berlin batters reached base in the stanza with two outs, leading to four runs, in a big scoring inning for the visiting contingent as Post 68 zipped up a 4-3 Zone 1 win on the road. Other than the fourth inning snafu, Duquette (four strikeouts, five hits, two walks) was sharp, threw strikes but was ultimately saddled with an untimely loss. “He threw very well,” said Bristol coach Jerry LaPenta of Duquette. “You can’t assume anything with a two-out rally. You’ve got to get the third out. They got a couple good placed hits and that one grounder there at the end that Evan [Bouchard] dove on. If that’s 10 feet to the left, it’s only three runs [instead of four].” Bristol out-hit Berlin 6-5 and nabbed an early 2-0 lead in the showdown. Post 2 executed three sacrifice bunts […]

Jr. Legion overcomes Wolcott, at last
By MICHAEL LETENDRE STAFF WRITER BRISTOL – Never count the Bristol American Legion Junior Legion team out. The defending Northeast Regional Tournament champions looked listless offensively over the first five innings of its game against Wolcott in a Zone 1 showdown on Monday, June 17. Down 7-2, Post 2 tied the game up over the next two innings, forced an extra frame and in the end, a walk-off, bases loaded RBI by Owen Davis propelled Bristol to an 8-7 win in front of a lively crowd from Muzzy Field in Bristol. It was the third straight walk-off Post 2 has participated in but this time around, it was Bristol coming away with the win after two one-run losses at West Hartford on Saturday, June 15. “You’ve got to believe, that’s what it’s all about,” said Bristol left fielder Mike Lorenzetti. “We have a great team, great guys on our team. We had our great senior team cheering us on, the energy was going. Everything just worked out.” Bristol nabbed 12 hits in the game with Roberto Cruz leading the charge with a 3-of-5 performance that included two runs and an RBI. Joseph Maglio III (one hit, 4 Ks, 2.0 IP) […]

Commentary: God’s summer vacation? Yours?
Early one summer day, God decided it was time for a vacation. Surely no one would miss Him if He took the next eight to 10 weeks off for some much-needed rest and relaxation, would they? On the first day, He slept late, got up and had a leisurely breakfast while reading the Heavenly Tribune. He looked out the window and saw that it was a lovely day, so He took a stroll through town. The birds were busy gathering food for their fledglings; the bees were buzzing around the flowers; all seemed right with the world. Yet God noticed that something seemed to be missing. There were no parents happily watching as their children played on the swings at the playground. In fact, the playground was deserted. God was puzzled but continued His walk. As He proceeded through the streets, He was surprised to find that there were no people anywhere, not in the grocery store, the coffee shop or even the post office. His walk around the neighborhood finished, God returned home. He sent a text message to His friend Gabriel saying “Gabe, do you know where all my people are?” Gabriel texted back replying, “Don’t know. I’m […]
