By KEVIN ROBERTS STAFF WRITER The Bristol Blues won four of the five games they played last week, including three in a row at the end. After 7-0 and 8-5 wins at Muzzy Field on June 19 and June 22, the Blues embarked on a six-game road trip that began this past Sunday against the Westfield Starfires in Westfield, Mass. “It was tough because we were supposed to have a home game on Thursday (June 20), then we’d have the off-day. That gets postponed, so we end up having two off-days with no baseball activity,” said assistant coach Jordie Scheiner, who filled in for head coach Ronnie Palmer on June 22. “We were unsure of what would happen tonight, but the boys came and they battled, and now we just have to prepare for a long week of road trips.” Bristol beat Westfield, 7-4, on Sunday and improved to 8-10 on the season. Here’s what happened last week: Blues 6, Suns 5 JUNE 17—Bristol scored two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to overcome a 5-0 deficit and beat Pittsfield at Wahconah Park. Dominic Niman (West Hartford) was the winning pitcher after throwing 1.2 innings […]

Kindness rules at BC graduation
By JAYMIE BIANCA CORRESPONDENT For its 2019 commencement, Bristol Central High School centered its theme around kindness, titling their event: “In a world where you can be anything; be kind.” This theme manifested itself throughout several of the evening’s festivities. Kindness was truly evident even before the graduation officially began. Laughs reverberated throughout the school as students posed for photos and compared their decorative graduation caps. Some were abundant with inspirational quotes, while others were surrounded with bright flowers. When asked about the wealth of emotions students felt that evening, many were upset to see this phase of their lives come to an end, but were also ecstatic to see the possibilities that lie ahead. Nathan Rosa, a member of the football and basketball teams at Bristol Central said he was “excited for the next chapter.” When asked about adjusting to college life, Rosa thought that “it may take a year or so, but I know I will be okay.” Rosa will be attending Western New England University in Springfield, Mass. to study accounting. Belle Pons described similar sentiments when asked about graduation. She said “it doesn’t feel real” and that she will truly miss “the people and friends I […]

Class of 2019 president, Paige McLaughlin said all who were graduating “have not made this challenging yet worthwhile journey alone,” thanking all of the family and friends seated throughout the athletic fields for playing a role in a graduate’s life. “For our class gift, we as a group, have decided to put money towards the auditorium in hopes of restoring the timeworn seats,” said McLaughlin. “We hope future classes here at Bristol Eastern are able to enjoy concerts, plays, musicals, and various other ceremonies just as thoroughly as we have these past four years.” “What makes your class special is that not only have you made those connections, you have taken those relationships one-step further and make our world a better place,” said Bristol Eastern principal Marisa Calvi-Rogers. Assistant Super-intendent of Schools Dr. Catherine Carbone asked graduates to go forth into the world and “be epic,” and to always have “insane confidence in yourself,” as the class of 2019 will become the changemakers that the world needs. Jr. Legion overcomes Wolcott, at last
By MICHAEL LETENDRE STAFF WRITER BRISTOL – Never count the Bristol American Legion Junior Legion team out. The defending Northeast Regional Tournament champions looked listless offensively over the first five innings of its game against Wolcott in a Zone 1 showdown on Monday, June 17. Down 7-2, Post 2 tied the game up over the next two innings, forced an extra frame and in the end, a walk-off, bases loaded RBI by Owen Davis propelled Bristol to an 8-7 win in front of a lively crowd from Muzzy Field in Bristol. It was the third straight walk-off Post 2 has participated in but this time around, it was Bristol coming away with the win after two one-run losses at West Hartford on Saturday, June 15. “You’ve got to believe, that’s what it’s all about,” said Bristol left fielder Mike Lorenzetti. “We have a great team, great guys on our team. We had our great senior team cheering us on, the energy was going. Everything just worked out.” Bristol nabbed 12 hits in the game with Roberto Cruz leading the charge with a 3-of-5 performance that included two runs and an RBI. By MICHAEL LETENDRE SPORTS WRITER BRISTOL – Bristol Central High School saw several of its senior athletes sign the dotted line as several athletes from the school on the hill will continue on into the collegiate ranks of the NCAA. And that includes the football program as Central has seen its roster turning over players to the collegiate level and recently, two members of its program will advance their careers to the NCAA ranks. Senior Daija Fitzpatrick, the quarterback of the Central team this past year, signed on with the program at American International College while fellow senior Nate Rosa recently committed to Western New England College. For Fitzpatrick, all the hard work paid off as the defensive standout gets a chance to prove his abilities just up the road in Springfield. “Excited and blessed to say I will be continuing my academics and athletics career at AIC,” said Fitzpatrick via Twitter. He officially signed the dotted line to attend AIC in a ceremony from Bristol Central High School on Wednesday, May 30. Plantsville school will be renamed after Oshana
By SHERIDAN ROY STAFF WRITER The Southington Board of Education has voted to rename Plantsville Elementary School after former long-time BOE member Zaya A. Oshana, who passed away in 2017. The decision was made after an effort on the board to designate South End Elementary School failed. Oshana served the BOE for 34 years. An ad-hoc committee was formed to determine, first, if Oshana met the criteria to have a school facility named after him. Then, the committee was charged with bringing forth a recommendation of which school should be re-named. The committee deliberated between Flanders, Plantsville and South End Elementary Schools. A recent population study had suggested Flanders may close at some point in the future, so Flanders was ruled out, and some community members argued Plantsville School had historic ties to the Plants brothers of Plantsville. Others argued South End was historic in itself as it was named after an original schoolhouse of Southington. Ultimately, the committee felt the historic background of South End Elementary School was preserved in the original South End Schoolhouse. They brought forth the recommendation to rename South End after Oshana. “I thought about South End’s slogan, ‘The small school with a big heart,’” […]
