Letter: Reader is unhappy with Democratic state budget

Please include a name, address, and phone number and email us at  JGoralski@ SouthingtonObserver.com.To the editor: Despite many warnings that the state’s current $20 billion budget was doomed from the start, our State Rep. David Zoni came home from the Capitol in Hartford to tell us that he was proud of this budget. He celebrated with fellow Democrats who called the budget transformative. But Democrats were wrong. This budget was not transformative. It was damaging. Just three months after its passage, the budget fell into significant deficit. Despite the fact that it contained the second largest tax increase in state history, just four years after the largest tax increase ever, there was still a gaping budget hole. The Democrats’ answer to the problem was to nibble around the edges and do just enough to squeak by for the remainder of this year. But because they refused to look at long-term structural changes, our state budget will again face deficits next year, totaling at least $350 million, and projections already show a $3.6 billion shortfall on the horizon after the next election.
