By LISA CAPOBIANCO STAFF WRITER Recent data shows that Plainville students overall scored above the state average when meeting or exceeding the expected level of achievement in math and literacy on the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA). During a Board of Education meeting held last Monday, Plainville Supt. of Schools Dr. Jeffrey Kitching the baseline results of SBA, which measures the range of concepts and skills associated with the Common Core Standards for math and literacy. The test was administered to students from grades three to eight as well as grade 11. This year, testing replaced the Connecticut Mastery Test and Connecticut Academic Performance Testing in language arts and math for elementary, middle and high schools. Plainville Community Schools had a high participation rate of the test, which had very few, and in some cases, no “opt-outs” of SBA. The test was administered to the elementary schools and Plainville High School between the end of May and June, while the middle school students took SBA in the beginning of April.
