Downtown gearing up for block party

By LINDSAY CAREY STAFF WRITER Although the summer is coming to an end, there is still time for some outdoor family fun because it’s almost time for the Plainville Downtown Block Party. Food vendors, craft vendors, face painting, a live band, and a bounce house will be set up on Whiting Street between West and East Main streets for the 13 annual Plainville Downtown Block Party on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 4 to 9 p.m. “The block party was originally started to bring people downtown,” said Jo Moreno, who helps organize the event every year along with 10 other volunteers. “Then it morphed into something bigger.” According to Moreno, the event typically brings in between 1,500 to 2,000 people. In collaboration with the Plainville Police Association, the Plainville Downtown Block Party donates some of the proceeds from the event into a scholarship fund to honor Robert M. Holcomb, an officer who was killed in line of duty on Nov. 21, 1977. The rest of the proceeds goes towards the Plainville Community Fund, which directly goes back right back into residents and institutions in Plainville.
