Town applies for grants to fix bridges

By Lisa Capobianco Staff Writer The Town Council voted unanimously to approve grant applications for the deck replacements of both the West Center Street and the Spring Street bridges. Town Manager Garry Brumback said the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) inspects town bridges over 20-feet in length every two years. ConnDOT recently conducted inspections of both bridges in January 2013. During a recent Council meeting, Brumback said ConnDOT rated the West Center Street Bridge over the eight-mile river a three out of a possible ten, which is considered to be in “serious” condition. The Spring Street bridge over the Quinnipiac River received a rating of four out of ten, which is considered to be in “poor” condition. The town recently submitted the applications to ConnDOT May 15. “This is really to replace the superstructure and the road piece of it” said Brumback, who included both bridge projects in the Capital Improvement Plan of his budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2013-2014. “Both concrete decks have been deteriorating over the years and deficiencies.” Brumback said the process will take awhile, and construction will not begin until 2016.
