Bristol saluted for efforts in Clean Energy program

Bristol All HeartMore than 145 Connecticut municipalities were honored Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Wallingford’s Oakdale Theater for their participation in the nationally-recognized Clean Energy Communities program, an Energize Connecticut initiative that incentivizes cities and towns to support energy efficiency and renewable energy. The ceremony was hosted by Energize Connecticut, which is a partnership between the State, Eversource, The United Illuminating Company and Connecticut Green Bank. Bristol was one of 53 silver award recipients. These municipalities completed the requirements of bronze level and established an energy task force, engaged in community awareness of energy programs, earned a Bright Idea Grant and completed one full year of benchmarking municipal energy usage. 10 percent of the households and businesses have participated in energy saving programs and have completed 17 percent of their renewable energy commitment.

Police embrace beards to benefit cancer research

Police - No shave NovemberEmployees of the Southington Police Department will be participating in a “No Shave November” event to benefit cancer research. Police employees who donate $100 to the Saint Francis Foundation care of the Curtis D Robinson Center for health Equity, will be allowed to forgo the department’s no beard grooming policy from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. These employees will grow there facial hair in support of this great cause. All monies collected will be presented to the Curtis D Robinson Center for health Equity/Saint Francis Foundation in a presentation at the police headquarters community room on Nov. 30. Members of the community, who wish to sponsor a specific employee or simply donate to this cause, can bring a check written to the Saint Francis Foundation to the police department. Donations will also be accepted on the Saint Francis Foundation website under the “donation” tab for the Southington Police Department No Shave November event at www.saintfrancisdonor.com/Events/eventView.asp?EventID=80

Police arrest woman for prescription fraud at Walgreen’s

Tameka AllenThe Southington Police Department arrested a West Haven woman on Saturday, Oct. 24 for forging a prescription at a local pharmacy. Tameka Allen, 36, was arrested on a warrant at approximately 4 p.m. after an investigation showed that Allen attempted to fill a prescription for oxycodone at the Walgreen’s Pharmacy at 359 Main St. on June 2, 2015. The pharmacist noticed that the prescription was in the name of another person, so it was not filled by the pharmacist. Two days later, the pharmacy received confirmation that the prescription was fraudulent, and at that time the police investigation was initiated. Allen was arrested and charged with second degree forgery and criminal attempt/obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. She was released on a promise to appear at Bristol Superior Court on Nov. 2.

PARC Thanksgiving Bowling Classic to be held Nov. 21

PLAINVILLE – PARC, family centered services for people with developmental disabilities, will present the 13th Thanksgiving Bowling Classic on Saturday, Nov. 21. This major fund raiser will be held 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Laurel Lanes, 136 New Britain Ave. The $25 entry fee will allow three games of bowling, shoe rental, a limited edition PARC T-shirt, a hot dog and beverage from Ruthie’s Place and one chance ticket for a gift basket. There will also be turkey giveaways and more. Teams and individuals are welcome. This event benefits the Healthy Living activities for people with developmental disabilities. Wheeler learns about fire safety

DSCF2279Plainville Fire Marshal Larry Sutherland recently visited Frank T. Wheeler Elementary school’s first graders to talk about fire safety and when to use 911. Students learned about checking home detectors, crawling low under smoke and to stop, drop and roll if their clothes caught fire. Sutherland also discussed the importance of having a meeting spot to be sure everyone was out safely. Lastly, students walked through the fire truck after learning about what it carried and the role of the equipment on board. 

Driveway to West Street parking lot to be repaired

bristol city sealThe City of Bristol is scheduled to repair the driveway entrance at the public parking lot located in the city’s west end. The parking lot, which is located at the intersection of West Street (Route 69), School and Divinity Streets, will be closed from Monday, Nov. 9 through Monday, Nov. 16 while repairs are made. The work will consist of replacing the existing driveway aprons and new concrete will be poured. Barriers will be installed during construction and while the concrete is curing, however the roadway will remain open. The work activities are weather dependent, therefore it may be delayed due to rain. Additional notification will be forthcoming if there are revisions to the proposed schedule. Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon, or Wednesdays, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Stop by the Wheeler Clinic community outreach table at the Southington Library and meet Justine Micalizzi, Wheeler Clinic’s senior community health outreach coordinator. She will provide information about mental health, substance use disorders and recovery resources, early childhood and other local programs and services in the community. Micalizzi will also help individuals and families navigate the complex systems by providing information and assistance with linkage to local providers. This collaboration is part of Wheeler’s Southington Health Outreach project, which is funded by a grant from the Bradley Henry Barnes and Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust at the Main Street Community Foundation. Veterans Day schedule for city; leaf bag, yard waste collection update

bristol city sealCity Hall and the Bristol Transfer Station will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11in honor of Veterans Day. There will be no curbside collections on Wednesday. Monday, Nov. 9 and Tuesday, Nov. 10 collections will not be affected by the holiday schedule. Rubbish, recycling and yard waste collection will be one day later than normal after the Veterans Day Holiday. Friday collections will be done on Saturday, Nov. 14. City Hall and the Transfer Station will reopen for normal business hours on Thursday, Nov. 11. Fall leaf bag collection will continue through the month of November. During this time, leaf bags are collected on your normal rubbish collection day depending on volumes. Place bags at the curb as soon as they are filled and leave them curbside until collected. The city has seen a bumper crop of acorns this fall; please keep leaf bags under 40 pounds each to avoid tearing bags and injuries to workers lifting the bags. Yard Waste (green barrel) service has been extended through the week of Nov. 30. If you subscribe to the service, your last collection this year will be during the week of Nov. 30 through Dec. 4.
