By John Goralski Sports Writer By the time that Matt Bennett entered the shot put circle for the championship heat of his event, the rest of his team was huddled at the edge of the throwing surface. Everyone else had finished their day’s competition at the Class LL championship meet. Every one else had fallen short of the state open. Bennett was Blue Knights’ only hope, and the Southington senior wasn’t about to disappoint. On Saturday, Feb. 8, Bennett cleared 52 feet, 4.5 inches in the shot put finals. It was good enough to shatter his previous school record, and it was good enough to secure him a Class LL title. “This is incredible. It’s something that he could have only imagined last year,” said Blue Knight track coach Annie Groom. “It really shows what you can do when you plan and work hard. He perserveres through everything. I think people take it for granted because he’s always doing so well, but I know how great a feat this was.” Eight Southington girls and a dozen Blue Knight boys competed over 10 different events at division championships.
