By Lisa Capobianco Staff Writer The Southington YMCA plans to kick off its ninth annual Polar Plunge on January 18, giving members of the community an opportunity to jump into the frigid waters of Sloper’s Pond for a good cause. Transforming into one of Southington’s most popular fundraisers, the Polar Plunge event features nine different teams made up of local politicians, school staff and officials, YMCA employees, firefighters and police officers. Lake Compounce will also have a team of plungers, and a “feature team” will be announced soon. Each swimmer requires a sponsor to participate in the event, and all donations help provide a summer camp experience at the YMCA Camp Sloper for children and teens. Mark Pooler, the Outdoor Center Director at Camp Sloper, said the YMCA received close to $24,000 in donations last year, and hopes to raise at least the same amount this year.
