By MICHAEL LETENDRE STAFF WRITER The Bristol Central wrestling team opened its season with a big win against Fermi of Enfield while just missing out on winning the Plainville Invitational Championship on Saturday, Dec. 21. Against the Falcons on opening night, Thursday, Dec. 19, the Rams were 63-12 winners against pesky Fermi. At 106 pounds, Joe Cherwinski picked up a pin in 1:54 while Jacob Ganavage (120) won via forfeit. The next three wrestlers from Central won via pin-fall as Josh Ganavage (126 pounds, 1:22), Jean Rioux (132, 2:29) and defending Class L champion Tyler Burrow (138 pounds, 3:44) took their respective matches. At 145 pounds, Kadeem Richards won by 5-2 decision. Josh Nelson was a 12-5 victor at 152. Meanwhile Ian Gonzalez – at 170 – pounded Zach Purdue for a quick pin in just 17 seconds of work. Tom Nelligan, at 182 pounds, won by 5-1 decision, Tino Pompei (195) was a winner by forfeit, Cody McQuarrie (220) easily pinned Alex Purdue in 1:27 and finally at heavyweight, Kris Nizielski was a pin-fall victor over Jake Richters in 4:40.
