By LISA CAPOBIANCO STAFF WRITER For Plainville, being a member of AARP means giving back to the community in countless ways. From collecting food for Plainville Community Food Pantry and personal items for homeless veterans to donating to the local fuel bank, the Plainville AARP has done a variety of service projects that benefit people from all walks of life. In addition, the chapter has donated to the Dial-A-Ride program at the Plainville Senior Center, organized field trips, and donated to the senior center’s Circle Group, a day program that provides outings for at-risk, socially isolated individuals. Next year, the chapter hopes to help grandparents raising grandchildren. Sally Miller, the president of Plainville AARP, said members are involved all over town. “We’ve done a lot to enhance the quality of life for a lot of people here in Plainville,” said Miller, adding how hard chapter members work. “No matter what I ask people to do, somebody raises their hand and steps up.” This high community collaboration is one reason why Plainville AARP received the Chapter of the Year Award.
