The following letter was written by a sixth grade student at Kennedy Middle School as part of their informed action unit in social studies. A small group of students wanted to share their feelings about Veterans Day after listening to a presentation from three local veterans on Nov. 10: To the editor: What does Veterans Day mean to you? Just another day off, right? That’s not entirely true. Recently, Kennedy Middle School had three very important visitors. Those special visitors were veterans who fought or served during the Vietnam War. During the presentation, I learned that there are more than just ranks in the army. There are physicals, tests, and endurance tests such as going through a chamber of tear gas. I can hardly imagine what it felt like having to retell the tale in front of children who’ve not the slightest clue what if feels like to be informed that you’re to enroll in the army. Whether you’re in charge of the missiles or in charge of the canine unit, each role plays a significan part in defending our country. Veterans Day is so much more than a day off.
