Lions Club celebrates 50 years of pancakes

Lions Club logoThe Lions Club of Southington is celebrating its 50th annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Calendar House, 388 Pleasant St. in Southington. The annual event is run in conjunction with the club’s advertising campaign, fundraising for the many community donations they make each year. Offering a full pancake breakfast for six-dollars person, all funds raised by the breakfast are donated directly back to the community. “Whatever money we raise we give back,” said Bruce Vagts, a 10-year club member. Vagts said the breakfast is one of the group’s major fundraisers, bringing in more than $6,000 in 2014. These funds were just part of the $19,000 the Southington chapter donated last year. “We try to help locally as much as we can,” Vagts said about the organization’s charitable efforts. The Lions regularly contribute to a variety of individuals and organizations in the town. They sponsor Boy Scout Troop #32. They provide three annual $2,000 scholarships to Southington High School seniors, and they sponsor students involved with the American Legion.
