Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation invites the community to celebrate Yom Kippur with them. All services this year will use new High Holy Day prayer books produced by the Central Conference of American Rabbis. Yom Kippur begins with the KolNidre service on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., and follows with services on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. Yom Kippur services conclude with a community breakfast to which all are invited. Children’s services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 23. “Yom Kippur is our most solemn holiday”, said Kevin Andersen, Gishrei Shalom’s president in a press release. “The services are full of ritual and meaning for all who attend.” The congregation’s home is in the First Congregational Church of Southington. The two faith groups work with each other and maximize the use of the space in their worship schedules and religious school. Friday night services and Saturday morning Hebrew school don’t conflict with Sunday morning church services and Sunday school. The Reform congregation began formally in 1984 and includes members from many towns surrounding Southington. Over 40 families participate in a broad spectrum of programming for children and adults.
