Ruth Hummel honored posthumously as marshal

300px-Flag_of_the_United_States.svg copyThe Plainville Memorial Day Parade Committee has chosen Ruth Hummel as the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Memorial Day Parade. This is a posthumous honor for Hummel, who passed away on April 4 after a long illness. Although Ruth Hummel was not a native of Plainville, a press release from the town manager’s office explained, she embraced her adopted town with fervor. She served as the town historian from 1990, as a conservation constable for 16 years in the 1970s and 1980s and founded the Plainville Historical Society in 1968, where she served as [resident for 40 years. She published her book, “The Farmington Canal in Plainville, CT” in 2007, wrote several articles about local history for area newspapers, and hosted a program on town history for Nutmeg TV. She operated a wildlife rehabilitation center called “Hummelhaus” with her husband for 32 years and oversaw the Tomasso Nature Park. On Memorial Day each year, Hummel led a tour through East Cemetery. She gave those who visited historical background information on the veterans buried there.
