State Rep. Whit Betts (R-78) announced in a press that two bills, which serve to provide identity and credit protections for both children and adults, have passed a key legislative hurdle and have been voted unanimously out of the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives approved H.B. 6403, “An Act Concerning Security Freezes on Children’s Credit Reports.” The bill protects children from identity theft by allowing their parent or legal guardian to place a security freeze on the child’s credit report. “It is important that we give parents the resources and tools they need to keep their children safe, and that includes protecting their identity and their credit,” said Betts, former member of the legislature’s Children’s committee, as reported in the press release from House Republicans. A freeze prohibits the agency from releasing information in the credit report without the parent’s express authorization. According to consumer protection advocates, current state law does not have a provision which allow parents to do this.
