Halfway thru season, PHS on tourney track

Agata Baltyn of Plainville against serves against Crystal Ferrira.By BRIAN JENNINGS STAFF WRITER After finishing with a 7-9 regular season record last year, and missing the Class S state tournament, the Blue Devils (5-3) girls’ tennis team is only two wins away from seven with the second half of the season still to play. The Devils dropped just one match from this past week, winning three out of four matches in four consecutive days. The Devils started the week off by traveling to New Britain on Tuesday, April 28, where they suffered their only defeat of the week, falling to the Golden Hurricanes (6-2), 5-2. “New Britain is very strong, especially at the top of the singles lineup,” said Plainville coach Chuck Radda. “All four of their singles players were strong, skilled, consistent players. They were pretty consistent up and down the lineup. We were competitive in doubles and most of the matches. From what I understand, their number one is a recruited player and was tough to keep up with. It was a fairly competitive match, even though they didn’t show it.” No. 2 singles player Emilia Filipkowska went down in the second set, 7-5, to New Britain’s Elzbieta Chwatko, after winning the first set in a […]
