By LINDSAY CAREY STAFF WRITER Parks and Recreation will be offering a movie night for students in grades six, seven and eight on Saturday, March 21 in the Derynoski Elementary School auditorium. Director of Recreation David Lapreay said that this new program is taking the place of a monthly middle school dance that was run by Parks and Rec. Lately attendance of the dances has gone down, so they decided to cancel the program and start a new one. “Instead of just abandoning that age group all together, we’re going to try out a different kind of programming,” said Lapreay. “We’re hoping for a good turnout.” He said that they are hoping to continue the movie night monthly or bi-monthly, but will determine the best solution based on the turnout of first movie night. Due to school restrictions on food and beverage types allowed within the auditorium, participants are not allowed to bring in any food or drinks from outside. Approved snack items and bottled water will be available for purchase in the lobby, like candy, popcorn, and beverages. All proceeds will benefit Southington Community Services.
