BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) _ A Bristol plant that burns garbage to produce energy is facing more than $90,000 in proposed fines for violations of workplace health standards. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration says the violations at Covanta Energy Bristol Inc. include allowing combustible dust to accumulate on exposed surfaces and failing to determine the level of employees’ exposure to ash containing toxic metals. OSHA said Tuesday that it began an inspection in October in response to a complaint. The waste-to-energy plant can process 650 tons of solid waste a day. A Covanta spokesman said the company had not yet received the citations from OSHA but looks forward to resolving the issues. OSHA says the plant has 15 days to respond to the citations and has the option of contesting them before a review commission.
