Southington prepares for winter blizzard

Photo by digitalartTown Manager Garry Brumback announced that the town is prepared for today’s winter storm. Forecasts are calling for 22”-32″ of snow over a 36 hour period with significant winds and difficult driving conditions. In a press release, Brumback asked Southington residents that any non-emergency travel after midnight tonight be eliminated. “The Highway Department has already reported and begun preparing hills and intersections, and we are expecting them to do their best to keep our roads safe under most circumstances,” Brumback said in the release. “However, because of the length of this storm and the severity of both the snow and the wind, we will be required to provide breaks for our plow operators and expect that to begin after midnight tonight.” Brumback reported that the police are bringing in normal shifts, but the fire department will increase staffing by 20 fire fighters. AMR has prepositioned three ambulances at Station 5, the main station and their headquarters off of Atwater. The report noted that tonight’s Town Council is canceled, and Town Hall will be closed for non-essential workers tomorrow. “All employees should plan on reporting for duty at normal working hours on Wednesday unless they hear otherwise,” Brumback said in the release.
