Queen Ann Nzinga Center celebrates principles of Kwanzaa

By LISA CAPOBIANCO STAFF WRITER From African drumming and dancing to gospel, soul, and pop music selections to an African Vendor’s Market and skits, a variety of performances and entertainment will dominate the historic Trinity-on-Main for the Queen Ann Nzinga Center’s 25th Annual Kwanzaa Celebration next weekend. Established in 1966, Kwanzaa is an African American holiday observed each winter that celebrates family, community, and culture. The celebration is open to all races, ages, cultures, and faiths. Kwanzaa was formed to reinforce the seven basic values of African culture, which include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. “They are unique to all of our cultures,” said executive director Dayna Snell, who will sing during the celebration. “We all need to be a part of a bigger community—we all need to feel good about ourselves.” A nonprofit organization that has been operating for 26 years, the Queen Ann Nzinga Center helps children reach their full potential through the arts and to foster multicultural appreciation for all ages.
