by LINDSAY CAREY STAFF WRITER A torah that survived the Holocaust is being restored for its custodial synagogue in Southington for regular use in services. Candice Hall from Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation said the torah is at least 200 to 300 years old. “It was recovered during the holocaust when so many were destroyed,” said Hall. “Somehow it survived because a lot of them were thrown into the bonfire and destroyed.” According to Hall, Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation applied to be the custodian of the Torah and was approved about a year ago. However, the current condition of the Torah is not suitable for use in services so it has been primarily on display. “We’re sending it off to have a scribe repair it, so that it’s considered kosher,” said Hall. “It has to be kosher for us to use it in actually services, it can’t have any rips.” The Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation is having a big send-off celebration for the Holocaust Torah on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Southington in room 201. Hall said the celebration will include singing and dancing with the Torah among other activities.
