Glastonbury recovered the game’s first fumble and quickly took a 7-0 lead, but that was as close as they would get to a win in the Class LL-Large semifinal match-up this afternoon. Heavy rain limited the passing attacks for both teams, but Southington’s running game was the difference. Vance Upham powered the Blue Knights with three touchdowns and 111 yards rushing. Matt Maxwell caught the game’s only receiving touchdown and paced the defense with a pair of interceptions. Southington regained the lead with a 21-0 surge and held on for a 42-14 win at Fontana Field. With the victory, the top-ranked Knights (11-0) advanced to the Class LL-Large finals for the second straight season. They will face No. 2 NFA (8-2) on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain for a chance to become the first back-to-back state champions in school history. NFA beat No. 3 New Britain by a score of 30-6 to reach the championship game. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
