By LISA CAPOBIANCO STAFF WRITER Addressing a crowd of students, staff, and administration at Wheeler Elementary School last Tuesday, Board of Education member Foster White reflected on the time he was a fourth grade when the U.S. was involved in World War II. For White, during that time, it seemed like peace would never happen. A veteran who served in the U.S. Army Reserves, White served as the special guest speaker during the Veterans Day ceremony at Wheeler. “There were too many times our lives were saddened by the news of classmates’ relatives who lost or were missing in action,” said White. “To me as a young boy, it seemed like peace would just never come.” White joined the Army Reserve from 1959 to 1964. Serving during a time of relative peace, White said his father’s oldest brother gave his life while serving in the U.S. Navy. White also had an ancestor who left his farm in Bolton, Conn. to fight in the American Revolution. “Many left their homes and families to fight at Lexington and Concord, and later at the Battle of Bunker Hill,” said White. “This tradition continues today-Americans are still in foreign lands like Afghanistan and Iraq—they […]
