With changes in place, kids are back in class

Linden Street School-1st gradersBy LISA CAPOBIANCO STAFF WRITER Students, faculty and staff kicked off the new school year last week with changes to look forward to, including the newly expanded pre-kindergarten program and expansion in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and culinary arts at Plainville High School. The official first day of school took place last Tuesday after Labor Day weekend. On Wednesday, dozens of parents and families gathered at the elementary schools for the preschool orientation sessions, where they learned more about the program. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maureen Brummett said every family showed excitement for the program as their soon-to-be 4-year-olds checked out their classrooms. The program, which also received funding support from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, officially began last Thursday with bus transportation provided to and from the students’ homes. Enrollment at Linden Street School for preschool is full, and some seats remain available at Toffolon School. Enrollment at Wheeler School is nearly full, said Brummett. The program consists of two half-day sessions from Tuesday through Friday. Morning sessions take place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and afternoon sessions take place from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. Brummett said the district overall is excited […]
