By LISA CAPOBIANCO STAFF WRITER Every year, schools, churches, local civic groups, and organizations take to the streets of Bristol on their hand-crafted floats during the Mum Festival, showing their spirit for the city, while the sound of marching bands emanate the atmosphere. On Sunday, Sept. 28, scout groups, dancers, veterans’ groups, musical and theater groups, local businesses and other members of the community will take part in the Mum Parade, which will step off at 1:30 p.m. Bystanders who see the parade from the reviewing stand along Memorial Boulevard will hear announcements, parade history, music, and more from masters of ceremonies Michele Boyko and David Mills. This year’s theme of the festival is “Volunteers, the Hearts of Bristol,” and each float will be decorated to match that theme. An average of 20 to 30 floats typically appear in the parade each year, with a team of professional judges evaluating each one to present different awards. From the Mum Festival Chairperson’s award to the Hometown Hero’s Choice Award to the Mayor’s Award, clubs and organizations have received various recognitions for their floats.
