By Alexa Gorman Correspondent The Southington Lions Club is sponsoring its first-annual “Tour-de-Southington” bicycle race this Saturday, July 20. Proceeds will be donated to the local food pantries and the Bread for Life program, which serves lunch daily. The races will start and end at YMCA’s Camp Sloper, on East Street. Riders can compete in a 12, 30 or 50 mile race. Rick Hanscom, vice-president of the Southington Lions, organized the race in order to promote wellness and biking in the Southington area. “I do a lot of bike riding,” Hanscom said, “so I thought this would be something to do as a community.” Hanscom has raced with his son for about ten years. He will compete in the 30 mile race Saturday. So far, about 30 cyclists have registered, but Hanscom’s goal is to reach 50 riders and raise $5,000. “I ride with a group, but I’m hoping to get more groups [of cyclists] together this weekend,” he said. The Lions Club will serve lunch on the day of the race.
