Tomasso Nature Park celebrates the big 2-5

What the Tomasso Nature Park once looked like.By LINDSAY CAREY STAFF WRITER Tomasso Nature Park, the home to a wide range of New England wildlife, will celebrate its 25th anniversary on July 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Tomasso Brothers began this project, because they wanted to expand an airport runway out into the marshland, however, Ruth Hummel, town naturalist and historian was there to stop them. The Tomassos built and donated the park to the Town of Plainville to restore the wetlands, which were lost in their runway project. Michael Tomasso and Hummel became good friends throughout the years through this venture. Once the water started returning to the wetlands, animals began being seen throughout the park. All of the plants and wildlife in the Tomasso Nature Park are native, with the exception of a special dogwood, which was planted in memory of a woman in town who worked in the park. The tree will be dedicated to her at the event. There will also be exhibits and narrated tours to educate people about the animals in the park as well as free hot dogs, chips and cold sodas from the Saints Restaurant. “It’s a sanctuary for animals,” said Stephen DelBuono, chairman of the [...]
