Youth helps at the dog pound to earn Girl Scout award

By Ed Harris Kayla Sica, pictured here with Animal Control Officer Dave Ireland and one of the three current dogs up for adoption, is finishing up a project at the Southington Dog Pound that will not only help the dogs, but also earn her the Girl Scout’s Gold Award.By Ed Harris Editor Kayla Sica, a Senior Girl Scout, is working to earn her Gold Award by undertaking a project called Success at the Dog Pound. As part of the project, Kayla is looking to bring awareness to the Southington Dog Pound, its adoptions and creating a permanent donation program that will help collect toys, treats and blankets and towels for the dogs. She is also installing new signage and putting together a tip pamphlet to help insure that new adoptions are successful. “I’ve always loved dogs,” Kayla said, describing why she chose the dog pound as her gold project. “I wanted to help the dog pound as much as I could.” Kayla said she is almost done with the project, something she has worked on for close to a year. To earn the Girl Scout’s Gold Award, which is equivalent to the Boy Scout’s Eagle Scout award, Kayla must spend at least 80 hours on a project. Animal Control Officer Dave Ireland, who is acting as Kayla’s community mentor, thanked the 14-year-old for her work.
